Accepted Types of Copper
-
#1 Clean Copper
This is a combination of #1 copper pipe & wire. Paint, stickers, solder, and attachments must not be present.
The individual wire strands must be 16 gauge (pencil lead) or thicker, and the pipe must have no solder or soldered fittings, and piping must have little varnish.
Shall consist of clean, untinned, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire, and pipe, free of brittle burnt copper.
-
#1 ICW Copper
#1 High grade copper (ICW) will have a recovery of at least 75% copper to 25% insulation. Connector ends must be removed.
#1 Mid grade copper (ICW) will have a recovery of 50% - 75% copper and 50% - 25% insulation.
#1 Low grade copper (ICW) will have a recovery of less than 50% copper to 50% or more insulation. It is very pliable compared to high grade and mid grades so when bent it only slightly holds its shape.
-
#2 Clean Copper
This is a combination of #2 copper pipe & wire with anything other than copper connections or with sediment, copper wire from burning, hair wire, or brittle burnt wire.
Should be reasonably free of ash and of the following: excessively leaded, tinned copper, brasses and bronzes, excessive oil content, iron and non-metallics.
You can upgrade #2 copper tubing to #1 copper by removing any solder pieces, painted, stickers, and varnished pieces with shearing tools.
-
#2 ICW Copper
#2 High grade copper (ICW) will have a recovery of at least 75% copper to 25% insulation.
#2 Mid grade copper (ICW) will have a recovery of 50% - 75% copper and 25% - 50% insulation.
#2 Low grade copper will have a recovery of less than 50% copper and 50% insulation. It will be the most pliable grade of insulated copper wire and will not hold a shape when bent.
-
Bare Bright Copper
Bare bright copper is clean copper wire with individual strands of 16 gauge or thicker.
This material is usually from removing insulation from ICW with a wire stripper.
No coated #1 copper wire and no foreign materials.
-
Recoverable CU
Copper recoverables are items that have copper materials encased in foreign materials that can be recovered.
They can be categorized as High grade, Mid grade, or Low grade based on how much copper can be recoverable compared to foreign materials.
-
CU Transformer
Copper Transformers are usually very dense and heavy due to the steel outer casing that is often around them.
They can vary in sizes from the size of a quarter to the size of a car.
